Everyone has mouth bacteria, but when we brush and floss our teeth, we wash the bacteria away. This keeps that bacteria in check and prevents it from causing problems. But, in today’s world, too many of us are always on the go. We run busy lives.

Some days it feels like are running from point A to point B with 0.5 seconds on the clock. In the midst of the chaos, some of us forget to brush or floss, thinking that we will make up for it later. But, then we get busy and our healthy oral habits find their way to the back-burner a while longer.

This is the mistake. Bacteria would colonize your mouth. The biggest problem with bacteria is how it thrives. Bacteria thrive on everything you eat and drink.


The Role of Bacteria in Oral Health Problems

Bacteria eat away at your precious tooth enamel, drilling cavities deep within. If left unchecked, Bacteria can reach your tooth’s nerve, located in the center of the tooth. Now, you have a problem. That problem first comes in the form of pain, or a toothache. But, that’s not all bacteria can do.

Bacteria can also collect on the surface of your teeth near your gums and irritate the soft tissue. They can also create pockets at the edge of the gums where the tissue meets your teeth. This leads to red and inflamed gums, also known as gingivitis.


3 Common Oral Health Problems



Some types of gum diseases are more permanent. Lucky for you, gingivitis is not one of them. You can reverse the effects of gingivitis with proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth for two minutes, twice a day every day. Don’t forget to floss. If a string of dental floss doesn’t appeal to you, you can use disposable floss picks. If flossing just is not your thing, a water pick may be a better solution.



There are many reasons that you may have a toothache. Dental decay is generally the cause. If this is the problem, you will still need to see the dentist.

Before you try a home solution for toothache, check the area around your tooth. Sometimes, it is a simple matter of a piece of food lodged between your teeth. Other times food can get lodged between your tooth and gums. Either way, this can cause pain. If that is the problem, use dental floss to remove it. If it will not dislodge, you will need to see the dentist for help with this.

In the meantime, a couple drops of clove oil applied to your achy tooth, or cold compresses can help with pain. Yet, beware of temperature sensitivity. If you have temperature sensitivity, you may have bigger problems.


Canker Sores

There are different types of mouth sores, some more serious than others. Your dentist can examine your mouth, if you have a problem, and tell you which type you have. Canker sores are common mouth sores that are easy to care for. But, if you have lesions in your mouth, then see your dentist as soon as possible for an exam.

Canker sores most often occur as the result of injury. Have you ever bitten the inside of your cheek hard enough to draw blood? While accidental, this is enough to result in a canker sore. Braces or other orthodontia can rub against the insides of your cheeks. This can also cause canker sores.

Although injury does account for a common cause of canker sores, acidic food can also cause these kinds of problems. Your dentist should exam all these situations. Yet, there are a few natural solutions that you can do at home to relieve discomfort in the meantime —

  • Apply ice. Ice can help soothe the pain.
  • You should also avoid acidic or spicy food until your mouth heals.
  • Brush your teeth with gentle motions. Avoid any mouth washes that contain alcohol as these can irritate your mouth.
  • A wet tea bag placed against the sores can also help conquer any inflammation.
  • If your sores appear to ooze, you can rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution. Just add a tablespoon of salt to a cup of warm water. This will help dry the sores up.


There are many home remedies for oral health concerns. These are but a few. But, in all cases, oral health problems can be something minor or more significant. More significant problems need an exam from your dentist as soon as possible. All in all, remember it only takes two minutes to give your smile the attention it deserves with your toothbrush and floss.
